Trading-card valuations: what to check first
Estimate from sold comparisons rather than asking prices. A card’s grade, language and print variant are part of its identity, not small optional adjustments.
Three practical checks
- Match set, number, language and variant
- Use the same grading company and grade
- Compare completed single-card sales in one currency
Regional buying and research context
Editorial audience focus: UK · US · Japan. Check local availability, currency, support and official announcements before comparing offers. This is an audience-testing focus, not a claim that every region has equal demand or that overseas products are locally approved.
Source-first research
Use the original links on CardLedger. Compare publication dates, official statements and independent evidence. Public tools and source links remain available without a paid membership.
Worked example: value after selling fees
Imagine five comparable completed sales of the same card and condition: £45, £48, £50, £52 and £55. The middle value is £50. This example does not represent a live valuation.
Assume a selling fee of 12% plus a fixed 30p, £3 postage paid by you and £1 packaging. Your illustrative net proceeds are £50 − £6 − £0.30 − £3 − £1 = £39.70. If you originally paid £35, the difference is £4.70 before any other costs or tax. Use your actual marketplace fee schedule; the example rate is an assumption.
Check each comparison
- Match the set, card number, language, print variant and condition.
- For graded cards, match both the grading company and the grade.
- Use completed single-card sales, not unsold asking prices or mixed bundles.
- Keep postage treatment and currency consistent across comparisons.
- Record the sold date and source URL, and explain why you excluded unusual results.
Why the result is a range
A median reduces the effect of one extreme comparison but does not correct for the wrong variant or too few sales. A £45–£55 example range communicates uncertainty better than claiming a guaranteed £50 sale. Recheck the evidence before listing and account for the possibility that the card will not sell.
